History Syncopated Rhythm can trace its roots back to the Jacksonville Ghetto Swingers performance troupe (1999-2000), the brainchild of Krista Strand. The origin of the JGS name came from the spontaneously energetic, or “ghetto”, style of swing dancing that the members specialized in. Scheduled appearances ranged from performances in regional clubs to lessons volunteered for community service. After the Jacksonville Ghetto Swingers were officially disbanded in 2000, the main network of members unofficially kept in contact.
Heather Parth took Strand’s original JGS framework and evolved it into the Syncopated Rhythm Dance Troupe. “It’s been a fun challenge to adapt a concept started when most of us were still undergraduates into a mature business model,” said Parth.
As acting Coordinator, Parth formed the troupe in 2006 with hopes to honor Syncopated Rhythm’s swing heritage as a specialty under a diversity of performance styles.
An original JGS member herself, Parth stated, “Syncopated Rhythm is proud to boast original JGS members and also welcome new faces.”
Syncopated Rhythm’s members are all part time. Day jobs include: software designer, martial arts instructor, and stay-at-home mom.
